Attack Speed Plateaus

Postby teutonnen » October 17th, 2011, 12:15 pm

Please note that I had nothing to do with the research they did as well as with the results they got. I'm just collecting it here since this information is important to most classes and it started to fade away in the endless data-stream flooding the Asura forum.

Also, if there is a GM or MOD reading this, please make it sticky so it will be easy to find for any interested player. Thanks in advance.

1. Introduction
Attack speed seems to not ascend proportional to the number you can see when you open your character status window [Ctrl + C] but to be bound to several plateaus.
This means that sometimes, huge improvements in attack speed won't make your character attack faster at all and sometimes tiny improvements will make a significant difference.

Take this as an example for an ASSASSIN:
If your character has 245 attack speed summed up (so it can be the white number alone or f.ex. 219+26), your character attacks at the same speed as one with 210 attack speed.
Watch this if you don't believe me.

If you now add the small amount of 10 attack speed to your build, you will suddenly notice a huge difference. Whatever, if you WON'T add any further attack speed, you basically wasted 35 points of attack speed which you could have used in another way (increased attack power, critical ratio or whatever.)

2. The attack speed plateaus
Now, let's come to the really important things: the attack speed plateaus  . This is an accurate list of all the plateaus for every weapon there is.
The original lists are there.

elitexile wrote:It turns out all "melee" weapons (including staves) have the same plateaus; only xbow and longbow have their own. Class doesn't matter as I tested a few of the same weapons on both my archer and BS and got consistent results. Dual wielding doesn't have its own plateaus either. The full list of my results:

All melee weapons:
(for dual wielding, two hits counts as one attack in this list)
96-103 attack speed = 50 attacks per minute
104-104 attack speed = 52 attacks per minute
105-115 attack speed = 55 attacks per minute
116-116 attack speed = 57 attacks per minute
117-129 attack speed = 61 attacks per minute
130-130 attack speed = 64 attacks per minute
131-147 attack speed = 68 attacks per minute
148-149 attack speed = 73 attacks per minute
150-171 attack speed = 78 attacks per minute
172-174 attack speed = 84 attacks per minute
175-205 attack speed = 92 attacks per minute
206-209 attack speed = 102 attacks per minute
210-255 attack speed = 110 attacks per minute
256-261 attack speed = 128 attacks per minute
262-338 attack speed = 136 attacks per minute
339-348 attack speed = 170 attacks per minute
349-??? attack speed = 182 attacks per minute

Crossbow:
98-105 attack speed = 50 arrows per minute
106-106 attack speed = 52 arrows per minute
107-122 attack speed = 55 arrows per minute
123-123 attack speed = 59 arrows per minute
124-135 attack speed = 61 arrows per minute
136-147 attack speed = 68 arrows per minute
148-149 attack speed = 75 arrows per minute
150-179 attack speed = 78 arrows per minute
180-185 attack speed = 86 arrows per minute
186-239 attack speed = 91 arrows per minute
240-244 attack speed = 102 arrows per minute
245-250 attack speed = 110 arrows per minute
251-348 attack speed = 136-138 arrows per minute
349-359 attack speed = 170-172 arrows per minute
360-??? attack speed = 182-184 arrows per minute

Longbow:
95-109 attack speed = 50 arrows per minute
110-110 attack speed = 52 arrows per minute
111-121 attack speed = 55 arrows per minute
122-130 attack speed = 61 arrows per minute
131-159 attack speed = 69 arrows per minute
160-166 attack speed = 75 arrows per minute
167-176 attack speed = 78 arrows per minute
177-179 attack speed = 89 arrows per minute
180-212 attack speed = 92 arrows per minute
213-216 attack speed = 102 arrows per minute
217-310 attack speed = 110 arrows per minute
311-328 attack speed = 136 arrows per minute
329-348 attack speed = 170 arrows per minute
349-??? attack speed = 182 arrows per minute

foxalt wrote:349-501 attack speed = 372 attacks per two minutes
502-??? attack speed = 504 attacks per two minutes

These thresholds are suitable for the assassin with two swords, a crossbow and at other thresholds.

372 attacks per two minutes at 349+ attack speed is somewhat close to what I got with melee weapons - crossbow doesn't reach that plateau until 360+ attack speed though.

I think there is no further explanation needed concerning this list.

3. Attack speed ticks
alexandercadeyrn wrote:I actually think the attackspeed breakpoints are attacks per tick.

For those that don't know what I mean: ticks are what happens for example when you use restoration. Your MP/HP regeneration ticks, mana usage of toggles ticks...

... attackspeed ticks.
I think there are 2 ticks, and your actual attackspeed is attacks per first tick + attacks per second tick, rounded separately for each one ofc.
There is a system behind the numbers (yes, even the very high gaps are part of it), which shows us a low gap, followed by a high gap, followed by a low gap, and so on.... with both gaps increasing exponentially (or sth like that... the graph I tried to visualize this in excel seems like it).
So I guess we get the next number after a big gap, when your attackspeed is high enough to bring a higher number of attacks into the first, longer tick. The second breakpoint comes from the point, where it increases the number of attacks in the second, shorter, tick.

If you look at the numbers for a bit and have some kind of mathematical knowledge, you inevitably get the feeling they follow a logical system. And I can't believe in a complex formula to annoy the crap out of us, while the ticks would fit in with everything else in this game perfectly fine.

Anyway, I will look more into this once I find the time - maybe someone else is a little less work-troubled and motivated to help along in the meantime? Because I hate big tables where I can have a simple equation :-P

4. Graphes
alexandercadeyrn wrote:Image

Used the breakpoints from 104 to 349, separated by lower and upper breakpoint (started at 104 since 96 is an upper breakpoint with the lower to it not being provided :-P ).

Just for those who can't see the system by numbers alone, I made it a little more graphical

Edit: actually, maybe it isn't ticks but cuts - considering it might work like cast speed and has to be enough to cause a significant increase (or reduction) to the 100% base attackspeed... but meh... kinda tired and overworked... AND I STILL CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS :-/

atk spd on top, atk per minute on the left.

Explanation:
The grey curve is the theoretic attacks per minute you would do if attack speed plateaus didn't exist. It's the basic formula of attack speed being the number of hits dealt in a timeframe of 120 seconds.

The red curve shows how attack speed effectively is related to the number shown in your character stats.

5. Useful tools
I this chapter, you'll find some very useful links collected.

5.1 Attack speed calculators

Shadow Hunters

Dual Wielders

CREDITS go to:

blueheaven67
For the clear Youtube video proving the existence of attack speed plateaus as well as the Shadow Hunter attack speed calculator excell sheet.

Elitexile
Foxalt
For the very accurate list of attack speed plateaus there are.

alexandercadeyrn
For the text about attack speed ticks/cuts as well as the first graph.

entspringen
For the second graph with added (exact) values.

madhatteress
For the Dual Wielders attack speed calculator excell sheet.

WHAT IS STILL MISSING:
-Attack speed calculator sheet for single wielders
-some videos to visualize

I'd be glad if someone else could do this since I neither have a char high enough to reach the higher attack speed plateaus nor the skills to create an excell sheet myself (and I don't want to give wrong information here :) )

Also, there pretty sure are some typos in my wall-o-text (Well.. I'm no native English speaker so I wouldn't wonder at all). If you find some, please list them and I'll correct it by the time I re-read this topic (might not until next week though).
