Read before asking: HW Most Commonly Asked Questions.

Postby catalyticonvert » January 30th, 2008, 8:37 am

There are many discussions in this website that cover several popular questions on the holy warrior class. This post is meant to help people with some of those questions. It does take some effort to read and does not necessarily give you a plain answer, because everyone plays their Holy Warrior differently. Note also that some of the discussions may be peppered with Flames or inappropriate responses that detract from the main topic.

So here we go, and if you have any thing that come up in your mind, post up and I will update the list:

1. Should I choose a Knight or a Soldier?
The best thing for every player before they decide in choosing one than the other is to look at the skill tree for both professions. The Knight skills expand on the HW shield/defensive skills, whereas the Soldier expands upon the HW "offensive" skills. At the end, you choose a character that you can personally enjoy.

3. What is the best weapon to use?
A few basic things that people may want to consider when they are choosing a weapon:

1. Cost. Cost is related to the amount of rupee, strike cubes, and at higher ranks: E-protect powders spent to make that weapon. The cost to upgrade a 2H weapon at the blacksmith is higher than the cost to upgrade a 1H weapon; however, the cost to upgrade two 1H weapons (ie: Dual Wield Swords) is higher than a single 2H weapon.
Effects of strike cube is greater on 2H weapon than on 1H weapon.
The following is an external link to the complete upgrade cost from R II to R V. Use at your own discretion.
http://z11.invisionfree.com/Avantgarde_Forum/index.php?showtopic=47

2. Skills. Weapon mastery increases the PATK of all HW class weapon, but ONLY Dual wield Mastery and 2H weapon Mastery increases the attack speed of the wielded weapon. Currently only two attack skills are truly weapon specific: Stun Mace and Stun Mace Perfection. Soldiers will obtain the following weapon based active skills:
a. Dual wield: Laser Blade and Dual Strike
b. 2H weapon: Wild Stream and Mighty Crash
All of which are obtained at JLV30+. Factoring skill cool down timer and mana cost, only Wild Stream and Mighty Crash would be practical (not accounting PVP)

3.Damage. When calculating damage, one should consider both PVE and PVP situations (unless you never foresee yourself going against another player). In PVP, physical damage dealt to the opponent depends on your PATK and your opponents PDEF, along with other factors used to scale the actual number. (the same for magical attack)
Epic V part II PVP focuses/boosted on/the skill based damage while the basic auto attack damage has been reduced. The damage generated by HW skills, as indicated by the skill cards and skill set, are PATK based.
In PVE, damage calculation is simpler because it will purely depend on your final PATK and attack speed (to be more accurate, level of mobs you are attacking and classification, also affect the Pdef count and overall damage but they are slight and almost negligible).
Two factors that need to be carefully considered are: Damage generation over an extended time or periodical high burst damage over a short time since one is more appropriate in a certain application than another.(PVP VS PVE, Auto attack VS Skill Spam)

4. What is the best pet to belt?
Belt stats passive skills are available to all pets when they reach level 40 and level 90. Each pet has its own belt stats combination.
The most popular are (all belt stats are for Unstaged Pets):
Yeti : +10% Vitality/ +10% Pdef
Orc : +5%Str+5% Vitality// +5%Pdef+5%Patk
Hawkman: +6%Str+6% Vitality// +6%Pdef+6%Patk
Tortus : +5% Vitality/+ 5% Pdef

Something else to consider is Unity Toggle that pets provide. For all practical purposes, a level 95 pet gives maximum Unity Toggle (next maximum toggle skill requires the pet to 'achieve' level 145)
A LV 95 yeti gives 150 Pdef Unity
A LV 95 orc gives 106 Patk and 106 Pdef Unity
A LV 95 hawkman gives 126 Patk and 126 Pdef Unity
At Evo 3, pets are able to generate unity potion. Unity potion gives similar effect as unity toggle for 1 hour. This ability gives the posibility of mixing unity toggle and unity potion for a character.

The Gnoll (Epic VI) is a rare tier pet (similar to Angel and Kenta), that very closely resembles a Knight in traits, as such its unity and belt stats bonus would probably be very useful to a shield wielding holy warrior. It also has a reflecting shield targetable buff.
l
A new addition to pet collection is the Genie. This pet is a special rare that provides Pdef/Patk unity (similar to orc/hawkman) but at higher values. I can not make further comment because I do not have any experience with this pet.

Other pets worth considering (beyond toggles and belt purposes) are:
Siren, Red pixy, Blue pixy, Salamander, Unicorn, Angel, Kentaours, Cerberus, Ifrit, Koala, White Dragon. (bolded pets are good for melee in general depending on what you want to build on)

5. What skills to max out?

Holy Warrior
http://rappelz.wikia.com/wiki/Holy_Warrior
Soldier
http://rappelz.wikia.com/wiki/Soldier
Knight
http://rappelz.wikia.com/wiki/Knight

Many skills will require you to reach a certain Job level and mastery of some other skills to a certain level. Consulting the skill tree and knowing what a skill does should give you an understanding on how to build your character. Building a character also depends mostly on how you will play that character. In general, you can hardly go wrong when focusing on increasing your armor and weapon passives, self buffing skills, stun skills and offense breaker.

6. How to effectively and efficiently tank?

Tanking involves the ability to generate threats, retaining aggro and mitigating damage taken. Holy warrior classes have skill sets and natural base stats that allow them to excel in the above tasks, thus making them one of the better tank in the game. Please read the following references to grasp some idea on how to be a better tank.

Side note to tanking: How to manage mana in a DP?
This specific problem arises from the skill spamming ability of the HW class. If you are not a skill spamming HW, you need to consider playing a different character than the HW class.

Very Important Posts on 'how to skill spam-the finger bounce':
viewtopic.php?f=432&t=823043&sid=d132e57f47e7c672ebd93e46faabe109#p4686053
viewtopic.php?f=432&t=894113&hilit=bounce&start=15#p5198093

Skill spamming is related to damage dealing and aggro retention/Threat. The general rule of thumb is to use the highest level on offense breaker skill, while adjusting other breaker skills based on your party composition and mana pool. Setting other spammable skills to level 1 or a low level is also recommended. Scheduling your spamming is the key to good Mana management and tanking. As always, keep a check on your total MP, and consume MP restoring drinks/potions/scrolls as necessary.

Side note to tanking: Skill and how adjust their level?
Press ALT+S, 2 small windows will pop up (left=skill table, right=skill tree), choose the one on the left and locate the skill desired. There should be a left and right arrow button where that skill is located which allow you to adjust the skill level. Once you have selected the desired level, then drag the skill's icon to your quick bar/skill bar.

Side note to tanking: These stupid wolves in Veiled Isle don't link?
Yes, those stupid wolves are not linked, as such, when there is a train of them, you will need to aggro each and everyone of them. This situation will require you to utilize your AOE skill, which luckily both classes should master at the end of their 2nd Job prior to hitting R6.

7. What is the best pet?
Almost any pet can be used with the HW; however, unity skill and the active skill of the pets would make certain pets more desirable depending on the HW situation. The HW should start off (beyond the recommended NPC basic: the tortus and pantera) with the Orc/hawkman and Yeti. Why these pets? If you are just starting in this game, you will not have a belt pet (until you bred one or bought one). A belt pet is critical to any character, and you should focus on having those (which yetis and orcs are very useful for) along with your summoned pets.

9. What soul stone should I use?

Note that this section only covers primary stat stones that have salient stats tied to them. The other trait specific stones (such acc/macc stones, pdef stones, crit ratio/power stones, etc are already self explainatory)
Updated Epic VII stats:
1 str = 2.8 Patk melee
1 vit = 1.67 Pdef, 33 HP
1 agi = 0.5 Evasion, 0.1AtkSpd, (1.2 Patk for ranged weapons)
1 int = 2 Matk, 30 MP
1 wis = 2 Mdef, 0.4 Macc, 0.5 Mres, 4.1 MpRec
1 dex = 0.5 Acc, 0.1 M.Acc, 2.2 Patk for ranged weapons
1 luck = 0.2 Critical Ratio

(Pre Epic VII-for comparison purposes)Soul stones can increase the basic character traits: Strength, Vitality, Agility, Wisdom, and Intelligence.
Use the following formulas to determine the effects of each soul stone

1 Str = 2 P.Atk for Melee and 3/8(or 0.375) P.Atk for Range
1 Vit = 2 P.Def and 30 Max HP
1 Agi = 0.5 Evasion
1 Int = 2 M.Atk and 30 Max MP
1 Wis = 2 M.Def, 3/8(or 0.375) M.Acc, and 0.5 M.Res
1 Dex = 13/8(or 1.625) P.Atk for Range, 0.5 Accuracy, and 1/8(or 0.125) M.Acc
1 Luck = 0.2 Critical Ratio

HP = Vit*30 + Lv*20
MP = Int*30 + Lv*20
P.Atk(Melee) = Str*2 + Lv
P.Atk(Range) = (Dex*13 + Str*3)/8 + Lv
Accuracy = Dex/2 + Lv
M.Atk = Int*2 + Lv
P.Def = Vit*2 + Lv
Evasion = Agility/2 + Lv
Atk Spd = Nominal 100 attack/120 seconds. Increased and Decreased by the weapon you have equipped.
M.Acc = 1/10*Dex + 2/5*Wis + Level
M.Def = Wis*2 + Lv
M.Res = Wis/2 + Lv
Mov Spd = Fixed 120. Increased by the Armor you have equipped, and by Boots.

HP Regen = Fixed 5%
MP Regen = Fixed 5%
Block Per = Fixed 0%. Increased with a Shield.
Crit Ratio = Luck/5 + 3
Cast Speed = Fixed 100.
HP Recov = 48 + Lv*2
MP Recov = 48 + Lv*2
Block Def = Fixed 0. Increase with Shield
Crit Power = Fixed 80%
Cast Speed = Fixed 100.
Max Weight = (Str + Lv)*10

In EPIC V!: Ressurection, ethereal soul stones and ethereal gears (armors, weapons, and jewelries) were added. More information on these items can be viewed in these pages:
http://rappelz.wikia.com/wiki/Ethereal_equipment
http://rappelz.wikia.com/wiki/Ethereal_Soul_Stone

Note that the chance of blocking with a shield depends on your shield mastery, active guard skill, and enchant level of your shield. As such, shield defense power (shield def stats) is secondary to shield blocking. You can choose to increase this stat using shield defense ethereal items; however, without high enough block rate percentage (especially at lower level) this build may not be effective/useful. Ethereal items open up new builds for almost all characters in the game. This subject will be reserved for future/advanced discussion.

10. When to use a shield?
See also What is the best weapon to use section
http://rappelz-forum.gpotato.com/viewtopic.php?f=113&t=740033&sid=f9458541f172f0e793d59bc4a1e7c064

11. Shield Charge/Divine Crash/Mighty Crash is(was) not working/bugged
Shield Charge: works better now.
Divine Crash: problem with character running back and/or character stopping all action after skill was executed.
Mighty Crash: does not knockback boss type mobs and stun effect upon knockback is not guarranted.

Please refrain from giving personal answers to the questions, but instead add to the list of the common questions and if possible give the link to a post that you may consider worth reading. And yes, this post has a bunch of typos and grammatical error in it XD.

11. When to use a shield?

I'll try to be coerent as much as I can.

1. Depends on what you want, but Knight's indeed get many advantages by using a Shield, Soldier's are 2h Weapon or Dual Swords

2. Yes, if you have patience

3. The one you like more. The more efficient? Depends on situations and Class (2h Mace, Dual Swords, 1h Mace+Shield)

4. Tortus (10% VIT + 100 HP) and Yeti (10% VIT + 5% P.DEF) after.

5. On Soldier, OB, DB, Blessing, MHealing, DCluster, Restrain, JB, Provocation, Hate Aura, Holy Aura, Light Speed - if I'm remembering correct atm, this are the ones that I keep MAXED on bar, all rest is setted to lvl 1

6. Spamming Provocation and OB, DB, MB(mana return, even being lvl 1 returns me sometimes above 150MP and the MAX I think it was like 225). Often I also use other's skill's and when my Mana goes a bit down I use Mana Scroll, Mana Pot and if needed, Sodas.

7.
- Tell your party to give you some time to build aggro, like 30 seconds maybe
- If needed tell Assassin's to use threat Decrease self buff's, to Champion's don't use Mental Concentration or Provocation
- During the initial time Spam all skill's you can, including the DoT's - Provocation is to be used all the time, working well or not
- support yourself by using your Mana pot, scroll's, grocery - you need Mana to keep spamming endless
- support yourself with Grocery NPC food (HP one), if help Cleric, you help yourself too
- If you notice cleric going down with Mana, say: scroll Mana on Cleric all, you stay on Tanking, you do your job

(if after this you lose aggro, blame the Devs, since you probably done all you can do and so does your friends if they think in profit of the paty and not in them only)

8. There is no best pet, all are goods, depending on situations. I have a BP to heal me and other's, she also Dd's and Crit's nicely buffed 4k's, I have a Siren if I wanna debuff or Sleep someone, someone's Pet, a mob. I can use a Skell if I'm in danger and can cast AoE fear or Debuff him, I can use a RP if I wanna use Massive Dmg in few seconds.. .. etc .. etc.. ;)

9. Use your brain, think - mind is the most powerful weapon in the world, in RL or here.

10. People have different opinions. as Soldier I use full STR/VIT, if dueling on arena Mages, I use the SET of WIS/VIT, sacrificing a bit of my STR and some HP

11. Being a Knight, on Tanking - Use it on PvP also if needed and 2h Weapon isn't effective enough

I for fun was equipped with a clean R5 Shield+Deflective Shield+Shield of Revenge skill's of my 1st job MAXED - remember I'm a Soldier - and when a DM's casted his powerful spells on me, I returned him back 1k HP - so gives a good idea of some skill's and Shield

You can put the best pet to us HW's is Yeti(10%VIT+5%PDEF) and Tortus (10%VIT+100HP). Being Knight or Soldier, usually if someone ask you to a DP is to Tank or/and grab some aggro, so your built on Belt fits with those 2 Pets.

Nice idea to EDIT and put the Topics, hope the new comers use it, which I doubt :wink:

Just as a point on how to improve the post: a lot of the linked posts make lousy reference material for someone looking for a straight answer. For example, the Knight v. Soldier DD thread has a lot of people disagreeing, often in rather impolite fashion, and there isn't an answer to the common question: "Will playing Knight instead of Soldier nerf me as a DD?"

An effective FAQ needs actual answers, hedged as appropriate when there isn't a consensus on the result. For example, instead of (or in addition to) linking to the other post, you could simply state for the DD discussion:

"Both Knight and Soldier can be effective tanks or damage dealers with the right equipment. Knights have stronger defensive skills, but must compromise their damage by using a one handed mace and a shield to use them. Soldiers have better mobility, which is often important in PvP."

(Disclaimer for the record, I have a 24 Holy Warrior and my highest character is 44. I'm just distilling what I learned from the post in question and other reading.)

Discussion sets Final Result's, different opinions, where a new player can go read and see the "why?", it will also help or should help to keep the same question's in only one Topic or 2.

If you made a "direct answer", some would disagree and dicussion would return again :wink:

There will always be a difference of opinion on some things. As a famous American curmudgeon pointed out, horse races would be pretty boring if everybody agreed.

If it's a point that's strongly debated, chances are that the frequently asked question has a simple answer which may not be 100% perfect, but is more than enough information to point the person asking the question in the right direction.

For example, the common question of "which pet should I use" has a lot of complicated answers. For a new player, the answer is to start with a Tortus for the beltability and the buffs and the comment that they'll be leveling another pet later. That's not the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, but it's the answer most people are looking for.

I do agree that there are some *distilled* answers that can be provided that would help the new players to better play their characters.
I mixed a few of game facts and selective discussion for the reason that I think that having those "handy" as a reference should benefit all level of players, not just new ones.

For some people, a direct cookie cutter answer does not really satisfy them and they are more satisfied by exploring everything first (in game or reading discussion) before finding that one answer, even if in the end they arrived to the same conclusion :)

I will try to put a few statements/facts here and there to guide people when they are reading the discussions as my time permit. And if it can be helped, I would try to make the whole "guide" short and sweet by mixing links to discussion and short facts-statements.

Thank you for the input, and I will keep the list updated.

gz on your great work, anyways, even if, as has been pointed out, some of the topics you link to turn into flame wars. Still, the info is there for anyone looking for answers, it just takes something to filter it through. That something being the "mind" Kepha pointed out in an earlier post ;)
I'll try to point any fledgling Holy Warrior this way if (s)he's looking for answers. :mrgreen:
As I always point out, and this goes to anyone reading. The one who's gonna play that HW is you, not me, not the rest of the flamers and helpers in forum. So, stick with what you like and you can't go wrong. :)

I have no mind, I found out that it was the best strategy to play Rappelz :lol:

Us high Player's can "teach" them what's properly to do, and show all HW's ability, but if they stick with us only they will lose the enjoyment of the game and the oportunity to discovering new things on their own.

Example, where some are saying in other Topic that 2h Mace is the way to go and Dual Swords aren't so effective, I can say that yesterday I killed Mobs 15 lvl's higher then me more fast with Swords then a 2h Mace, for each mob I spammed 4 lvl's MAX, and the Mace is more pimped then the 2 Swords, making me give again the Mace to my Cookie.

Us HW's have 2 great power's on us, and its called "Dual Wied" Passives and "2h Weapon" Passive, giving us the oportunity to be different for each fellow companion. If you work your Equipment a Spear can even outdamage a 2h Axe..

.. in the end if you learn to play the Class on your own, become good at it, you'll be recognized by other's no matter what Pet you have or what Weapon you use.

Hi, have just made a holy warrior character and read with interest the discussion on how to make a good hw. made load of notes but do not how to make a `combo of skills`. I put my heal and buff spells in the boxes at the bottom of the screen but how do you change the level and combine them?
:wink:

When you open skill list/tree (ALT+S), on the left is your lvled Skills, you see their "arrows" to put: 1/3, 2/3, 3/3.. example.. you just need to lower them and drag to the Bars :)
