Sorcerors are very weak at low levels. Either you use magic with a staff to kite alot, either you use a dagger + shield, but have to rest quite often for hp/mp regen.
Since you're new, i'm guessing you will only be able to choose between the 3 basic pets once you job change (poultry, pantera and turtle). I recommand you getting a turtle to start with. They have a pdef pasive skill that will make them harder to kill and a patk passive skill that will make him help you in killing mobs. At lv 40, they get a targetable pdef buff that will help you alot.
As for stones to put into your equipments, if you choose to go melee, then str/vit/agi will do, if you're a magic user, then int/vit are needed with a bit of wis for magic accuray.
Sorceror is the class with the most skills. However, there are a few skills that will be helpful no matter which style you play (melee or magic), so i recommand you leveling them 1st along with your job lvs. From the top of my head, there are creature mastery, weapon mastery, armor mastery, avoidance increase, creature regen, and if you're using turtle, then power support. I suggest lving up creature breeding only at later stage when you have enough lv in the previous skills.
Alright, hope that helps. Have fun.
